Located at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas, Dooars forms the gateway of Bhutan from India. The region comprises of the plains of Darjeeling Himalayas, the entire Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district. Dooars is equivalent to the term Terai which is mainly used in Nepal and Northern India. It is dotted with several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries which attracts tourists from all across the globe.
Dooars is a large region and the native people in here showcase Mongoloid features. There are several tribes including the Bodo, the Rabha, the Mech, the Toto and the Koch Rajbongshi. Besides the tribal people, a large population of Bengalis do reside in Dooars.
Home to the one-horned rhinoceros, spotted deer, sambar, hog deer, reptiles and the rarest variety of birds, Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary is very much popular among tourists. One can go for an elephant ride through the Jaldapara forest to spot some wild animals.
One of the most important national parks of North Bengal, Gorumara National Park is situated just at the foot hills of Eastern Himalayas. It has a mixed vegetation of forest and grassland and is famous for its population of one-horned rhino.
Buxa Fort is located at a distance of 30 km from Alipurduar and holds a vibrant history of its own. One of the main highlights of the Buxa Fort is the Buxa Tiger Reserve.
Murti is yet another tourist spot located on the banks of the River Murti. It is a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. One of the most popular activities in Murti is camping along with hiking.
Located close to Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary, Chilapata is a dense forest that is used as a corridor by the elephants to migrate between Jaldapara and Buxa Tiger Reserve and ultimately to Bhutan. The wildlife in here is rich and is home to some exotic flora and fauna.
Chalsa is a beautiful destination situated at the foothills of the Himalayas. The region is surrounded by thick forests, lush green tea gardens, rivers and streams. It is placed in between the Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary.
